Trend forecast: 2023/2024 interiors

Looking ahead to 2023 and 2024, there’s a trend towards spaces that make us feel comforted, or conversely, have a serious and buttoned up tone. The last few years have challenged our social conventions, sense of well being, and in turn caused many to rethink their lives, family, careers, geographic location, and values. In the home furnishings industry, we experienced a boom as everyone spent more time in their homes, relocated to new homes, or redesigned an existing home. The collective consciousness sought a refresh to support their well being, or a new location away from it all, or a home office space for remote or hybrid work. From soothing mint green and the evolution of curves, to warm neutrals with a heavy emphasis on brown and mixed wood tones, to stately olive green and more formal and structured silhouettes, I’m presenting my predictions for interior trends in 2023 and 2024.

Interior design trends move extremely slowly and evolve over the course of years, so many of these trends are not new and rather continue to evolve. Rather than focusing on “it colors” or fads on social media, I believe it’s more relevant to watch how cultural and lifestyle changes impact the way we want to feel in our home or a space. And since many interior design projects span years, trends that are identified now may not be installed, photographed and published for years. Thus why the trend curve moves slowly for interiors as opposed to fashion where trends can come and go in a season.

To begin, here are the main color trends which will cover paint, textiles, wall coverings and furniture.

 

In an increasingly busy world, we continue to embrace wellness across all facets of our lives. When it comes to our homes, layout, materials, colors, and moments of visual rest are all key attributes to support this lifestyle trend.

Sustainability and the environment all continue to become increasingly important, along with an interest in natural materials and mixed wood tones. Open concept floor plans will continue to be a popular option with smaller enclosed spaces also growing in popularity to support the feeling of protection and closeness.

The elephant in the room and perhaps one of the hottest topics of 2021 and 2022 has been the evolution of curves and bouclé. Again, with trends tending to span years in home furnishings, I anticipate these two to stick around with gobby and bubbly curves transitioning into more tailored shapes and being styled in contrast with traditional architecture and structured furniture.

Bouclé will continue on in popularity, with customers in high end furnishings favoring more memorable colors and sophisticated yarns. And for those of you who are ready to see this trend disappear, according to Better Homes and Gardens, “On Etsy, searches for bouclé chairs, sofas, and ottomans have nearly doubled over the past three months compared to this time last year, according to the marketplace’s 2022 home decor trend report.” I personally really love this textile technique and am ready to see designers use more interesting applications of bouclé, moving on from a cream colored bubble chair which does seem to have had its moment.

Checkerboard prints are forecasted for both fashion and interiors, with the classic marble checkerboard floor getting a scale update. Lookout for oversized and small scale versions growing in popularity, and tiling in muted colors will take shape in bathrooms and kitchens.

There are SO many more interesting trends taking shape right now. Scalloped edges, limewash paint, dramatic marble veining, Arts and Crafts era florals… I can’t wait to see what happens there. No matter what, I know we’re going to see some absolutely gorgeous and inspiring spaces come to life in 2023 and 2024.
